Today, we want to share an” ingredient highlight” on shea. A common staple in our products, this ingredient has numerous benefits.
Originating in Africa, shea comes from a tree which grows in the dry soil of the Savanna and can survive as long as three centuries. Harvest occurs from June to September. The fruits resemble avocados with a nut surrounded by fleshy pulp.
Traditionally, shea butter is derived from the nuts which are crushed, roasted, and grounded into a paste. The paste is then submerged in water to remove impurities. Lastly, the shea paste is mixed and cooked to form a butter.
Shea butter is composed of vitamins A, D, and E as well as fatty acids which serve the same function as the intercellular lipids to protect our skin. In addition, it has anti-inflammatory properties. The beauty benefits of shea are endless!
